Flag Steward

About the role

The Volunteer Flag Steward helps the City display and care for flags at designated City-owned locations — including the Veterans’ Memorial — in a consistent, respectful, and dependable way. It’s an unpaid civic volunteer role under City direction; the Steward does not hold elected, supervisory, or purchasing authority.

What you’d do

• Inspect flags, flagpoles, and hardware at designated City locations on a regular schedule.
• Raise, lower, replace, fold, store, and arrange respectful retirement of worn flags, following City instructions and the U.S. Flag Code.
• Carry out half-staff observances when directed by the City or under an applicable proclamation.
• Keep a simple activity and condition log, and promptly report damage, unsafe conditions, or supplies that need replacement.
• Help maintain an annual calendar of customary flag observances.

Good to know

• This is an unpaid volunteer role; it does not create an employment relationship.
• The Mayor nominates and the City Council appoints the Steward, who serves a one-year renewable term and coordinates with the City Clerk.
• Safety comes first — only ground-level tasks using City-approved equipment; no climbing poles or structures and no electrical or structural work.

Who it’s for

Someone dependable, respectful, and observant, able to respond within a reasonable time when notified of a flag condition or half-staff observance, and able to perform the approved tasks safely (with or without reasonable accommodation).
