Building Permits
A building permit is required for most new construction, alterations, and repair work on any lot within the city limits.
Specialized permits cover docks, electrical work, and water/sewer tanks; all other projects require a standard building permit. New homes in the low-pressure sewer zone must connect to that system.
How to apply
Apply online using the button above (new — currently in beta), or submit a completed application the traditional way. Either way, the $35 application fee (cash, check, or credit card) is paid at City Hall — in person, by mail, by email, or through the after-hours drop box. The building inspector generally reviews permits on Mondays, and approved permits are usually ready by the following Wednesday — this is a general guide, not a guaranteed timeline.
Building codes
The city has adopted the 2018 International Residential Code and the 2018 International Building Code, along with local amendments for public safety.
Contractors
Contractors must register with the city each year. Registration requires a fee and proof of liability insurance. The city maintains a current list of registered contractors. Registration is not an endorsement of a contractor’s work, qualifications, or experience.

Paper forms are still fully accepted — the online application is simply a faster option while it's in beta.
